A landmark building in the heart of Manchester's financial district
55 King Street is an address synonymous with the prime business sector of Manchester City Centre.
In total 55 King Street provides 70,000 sq ft (6,559 sq m) of first class air-conditioned city centre office accommodation on the largest single floor in the recognised financial district.
The building was designed by Sir Hugh Casson, winner of the RIBA Gold Award in 1971, and built originally as a bespoke NW Regional HQ for the National Westminster Bank plc.
Orbit Developments completed a comprehensive remodelling of the 100,000 sq ft building, further enhancing the status of this landmark building, which sits at the very heart of the City's financial and professional business district.
The huge Norwegian 'emerald pearl' granite panels cladding the exterior facades were each removed in a highly delicate operation and shipped to Portugal for specialist re-polishing. Similarly, the white marble flooring from the former banking hall was re-laid as a principal feature in the new main entrance foyer.
Externally the approach from King Street and the adjoining Plaza has been substantially re-landscaped with York stone paving, street furniture and additional lighting. In addition, a stainless steel/glass canopy and new retail units have been incorporated along the entire length of the building.
